WISE donates firewood to SPCA New Plymouth

WISE Sales & Marketing Team with Ellie & Floyd the Pug

The WISE Sales and Marketing team dropped off a trailer load of fire wood to the New Plymouth SPCA on the 29th of November. It was such an eye-opening experience and the team was able a sneak in a cuddle with our furry friends. We caught up with Amanda who has been with the SPCA for over five years now. The SPCA currently have approximately 60 animals including cows, horses, rabbits and birds in their care. Over 100 kittens are in foster homes.

While the team was visiting the SPCA we got a bit of insight to what the SPCA staff do. They work tirelessly and have such passion and connection with all the animals. Amanda shared with us the reason she loves her job is because she gets to care for the animals that have been neglected and gets to send them off to their new home.

Some of the challenges the SPCA face are trying to take in as many animals as they can however, there is a waiting list for cats and dogs. The reason for the waiting list is because they have limited cages and need to keep some spare for emergencies. All animals spend 7 days in quarantine, they are then de-sexed. Finally, they’ll be advertised for adoption and put in the adoption cages.

The public has been generous with their donation of blankets and towels however they’re in desperate need of volunteers, kitten food, kitty litter and kitten toys. Contact the New Plymouth SPCA on 067582053 or visit their centre at 75 Colson Road, New Plymouth.

Community Garden

As a Charitable Trust we are always looking for ways to help in our community where we can. Our staff are always keen to participate and contribute to make a difference in our society. Tracey, Our general manager is actively engaging with our locals to determine the needs of the community and how we as a charitable trust can help.

After engaging with Aroha Kai and the Waitara Food Bank Tracey was motivated to revamp our community garden again. Staff and scheduled volunteers will tend to the garden which will provide food for those in need. Seeding till Harvest will be at WISE premises in Waitara. The produce will be given to community groups and individuals for distribution. WISE is hoping for a cooking class with somebody local to teach the community. Also teaching health knowledge with vegetables.

The voluntary garden will be on-going every season. In winter Cabbage, Broccoli and Cauliflower will be planted. In summer passionfruit, tomato and corn will be planted. The focus is to grow staples such as kumara, pumpkin, potatoes and easy food that doesn’t require extra retrograde.
Waitara High School is currently helping WISE prepare the potatoes beds, weeding, raking and seeding. This gives the students a hands on learning activity and experience. They’re learning to grow their own food as well as healthy eating.
Our community garden is in need of volunteers, however you’ll need to bring your own equipment. You can also donate garden equipment and money for seeds. We are still in need of yoghurt trays, egg trays to assist with seeding. REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE

LED Lights Distribution

WISE is always looking for ways to make homes warmer, drier and healthier. With the number of children living below the poverty line on the increase, parents are struggling to put food on the table as electricity costs, amongst others take priority. A study done by the University of Otago found that one in 4 families are fuel poor. This is sad and is not the New Zealand we want ...
